Bhagawan's Tamil New Year Darshan & Discourse 1997

Bhagavan arrived at Sundaram from Bangalore at 10.30 am on 10th April. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome amidst Vedic chants. He blessed the assembled devotees and inaugurated the renovated prayer hall at Sundaram. Bhagavan then proceeded to the Shirdi Sai Mandir within the complex. He materialised a multi-gem star shaped jewel and pressed it on the forehead of Shirdi Sai idol in the Mandir. Smt. Anjali Devi was present on this occasion.

During the public meeting at Sundaram that evening, Sri T.G.Krishnamurthy, State President, Tamil Nadu Sai Organisation and Prof. Sampath, Former Vice Chancellor, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, addressed the gathering. Bhagavan then delivered His Discourse. He spoke about the saints of Tamil Nadu:
"The human being is a combination of Naitikam (morality), Dharma (righteousness) and Adhyatmikam (spirituality). All three constituents are con-rained in man. Hence, to recognise the Divine in man, his humanness should not be divorced from his Divinity. Divinity is immanent in man. Men consider themselves as mere human beings. This is nor so. All of them are manifestations of the Divine. It is because men do not recognise this fact, all kinds of confusions arise in respect of human activities in the phenomenal world. Every person should develop the awareness that he is Brahman - "Aham Brahmaasmi." Only then will he understand his true nature. God is not distinct and apart from man.
Bharat has been conveying profound truths to the world from ancient times. It proclaimed the universal message: "Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu". Unfortunately, because of attachment to the things of the world, the people have lost this sense of universal well-being and are wasting their precious lives. Worldly wealth and comforts are transient. Bharatiya culture has glorified adherence to Truth and Righteousness.

Forbearance is the greatest

Making a point during the discourse delivered from the Sundaram Shanti Vedika God is the Indweller in the human heart (spiritual heart). There is no meaning in going elsewhere in search of God. Realising this, men should lead a life of kindness to all beings. A man without kindness is an animal.
There was once a person in Tamil Nadu who belonged to a place named Pumpuhaar on the banks of the river Kaveri. He used to earn a living by weaving cloth and selling it. In the same place there was a rich man whose son was a naughty boy. This lad came to the weaver and asked what was price of the sari he was selling. The man replied: "Three rupees" (the price of those days). The lad tore the sari into half and asked what was the price of half the sari. The weaver replied, "A rupee and a half." The lad tore it again into two and asked what was the price of the torn piece. The man replied-"It is worth twelve annas" (three-fourths of a rupee). The weaver did nor get angry at the lad's behaviour. He was calm and unruffled. The young lad was astonished. He asked the weaver: "How did you acquire this quality of Kshama (forbearance)?" The man replied: "Forbearance is truth. It is right conduct. It is non-violence. It is a source of joy. It is heaven itself. It is the summum bonum in this world. There is nothing greater than forbearance in
this world."
The weaver composed numerous poems in praise of' Kshama (forbearance). This work is known as 'Thiruvaachakam'. Its author is none other than the Saint MaanikkaVaasagar, who achieved the highest goal of life by the quality of forbearance, brought glory to Tamil Nadu by his devotional songs. Over the centuries many other saints known as Alwars were born in Tamil Nadu.

"Everything belongs to God"
Here is another example: Among the various Tamil kingdoms, the reign of Pandyan Kings is famous. One of the Pandyan rulers wished to develop his kingdom by breeding horses. He had a young minister in his court. He was a man of character, full of piety and devotion. He led a pure life. He led a life of integrity and dedication. The king gave him the necessary money and commissioned him to purchase horses. The minister set out on his mission with his escorts. On the way he saw a Shiva temple in ruins. There he saw a holy man, Shiva Yogi. Conversing with the yogi and listening to his teachings, the minister stayed with him as a disciple. He lost interest in the mission of buying horses. He was immersed in the contemplation of God. He used the money he had brought with him for the renovation of the Shiva temple. This news reached the Pandyan King. He summoned the minister and charged him with misusing the money that had been given to him for buying horses. The minister replied: "I have nor misused the money. Everything belongs to God. I have used the money as an offering to God."
The king asked: "Who gave you the money?" He replied: "It all came from God. You did not create it. It was all a gift from God. And I offered it to God."
The king sent the minister to prison. But because an innocent man had been sent to jail, the king could nor sleep or rake food. The prisoner was singing poems in praise of God. These poems have become famous as "Thirumanthiram." This work is esteemed as another Veda in Tamil Nadu. The author is known as Tirumular.

Such a sacred land as Tamil Nadu has witnessed a decline in spirituality. Selfishness is rampant. Very few are filled with fear of sin or love of God. Fear of sin, love of God and morality in society have become scarce. People can experience God if they adhere to the path of truth. Very few pray to God for His grace. Most people pray for material benefits which are ephemeral. The sacred and precious human life is being wasted in the pursuit of trifles. Men are stricken with the maladies of the craze for wealth and power. What is earned should be used for the benefit of the society.
There is one other disease with which all are afflicted to varying degrees. It is the disease of Ahamkara (egoism). There is no basis at all-for this conceit. There is no reason at all for anyone feeling proud about one's wealth or any other possession. The only thing about which one should feel proud is one's goodness. People should cultivate love and cherish the feeling of oneness with all beings.
All your Bhajans, penances and the like are of-no avail unless you have a pure heart filled with love. It is like preparing food in an un-tinned vessel. It is bound to get spoilt. It is to develop a loving heart that you have to embark on the spiritual path. This pure love is the direct path to God. It is love which is unbounded and divine. The love of God should not depend on whether your prayers are fulfilled or not. Remember what ordeals the sages and saints passed through in their devotion to God. They braved all difficulties and earned lasting fame as great devotees. Life is a challenge - Meet it! Life is a game - Play it! Life is love - Enjoy it! Life is Awareness! The best way to love God is to love all, serve all."

Bhagavan went around the gathering and blessed the devotees during the 7.30 am Bhajans at Sundaram on the 11th. Sri S.V. Chittibabu, former Vice Chancellor of Annamalai and Madurai Kamaraj University, spoke about the integrated education imparted at the Educational Institutions established by Bhagavan in his speech following the evening Bhajan session. Bhagavan then blessed the devotees with His Discourse. An excerpt is included below:

"Sai devotees should understand the essence of our culture. Sacrifice and service are the two basic elements. There are two ways of God-realisation. One is the path of devotion where the devotee considers himself a servant of God. By repeatedly declaring, Dasoham (I am your servant) he goes on reducing his ego till the bondage of worldly attachment falls off. The other means is Jnana Marga (the path of knowledge). By constantly developing the sense of oneness with the Divine - Shivoham (I am the Divine) his consciousness expands to the point where it becomes one with
the universal consciousness and all worldly bonds are snapped.

Give no room for the ego. If any one examines his position in this vast cosmos, he will realise his infinitesimal smallness. Egoism arises out of ignorance. Expel the ego and develop love. With love, develop the spirit of sacrifice. Sacrifice alone can confer immortality, says the Upanishad. Sacrifice can confer bliss and health. Experience the joy of sharing. Renunciation is the key to sound health. Do not indulge in criticism of others. Count your own faults and rectify them. See the Divine in one and all. Elevate the quality of human life by living in amity with all. Chanting the name of God is the sure means of cultivating this universal love.

Melodious music can move the Lord
There is special merit in singing the Lord's name with due regard for melody and rhythm. The Lord is a lover of music. Moreover, when singing is done with fervour, it helps to drive out all bad thoughts from the mind. Melodious music can move the Lord and move all the participants. (Swami demonstrated the effect of melodious singing by rendering the song; "Rama! Nannu-Kaapaadumaa" - Oh Rama, protect me). Melodious music will move the Lord Himself. Hence, when you rake part in Bhajans sing with all your heart and soul. You must sing with such love for the Divine that you forger yourself. When you sing the praise of God with a pure heart, you will purify your environment, your country and the world.
People are looking forward to April 14th as the New Year Day. The name of the new year is "Ishvara." What does Ishvara mean? As Chittibabu (who spoke earlier in Tamil) said, the Lord is "Ammai-Appa" (mother and father). Their coming together is represented by the concept of "Ardhanareeshvara" - the Divine couple in one body. Every man is a symbol of "Ardhanareeshvara". The body is inert. The Atma is Consciousness. The body is Prakriti (Nature). The Atma is Eeshvara. The combination of Prakriti and. Paramatma constitutes humanness. Therefore, you should regard yourself as a symbol of "Ardhanareeshvara".

Do good and reap good results

As the new year approaches people are wondering what it has in store for them. It is not the year that brings good or ill. Your actions determine what you will get. What have the years that have gone brought you? Each year brings you the fruits of your past actions. Do good and reap good results. Your conduct should be good, befitting your human condition. Revere elders. Love all. Honour your nation. Give up attachment to the body. Then you will have fulfilment in life.
You all know what troubles the country is going through on account of the political situation. The basic cause is selfishness. Leaders are fighting for their own personal ends and not for the sake of the country. No one seems to be bothered about what is happening to the society, to the people and the country. "My power and my position" is all that each one is concerned about. How long will the chair last? When the body itself is impermanent, what is the meaning in chasing the chair? Hence, all should develop a broad outlook. Banish narrow considerations.
From the new year, cherish broad ideas, truthful ideas, loving thoughts and noble ideals. Only then the nation will be peaceful and prosperous. Bharat lacks nothing by way of natural endowments. It is a misfortune that it is in its present plight today. Realise the sacredness and great culture of Bharat. I bless you all that from the new year you should lead pure lives chanting the Lord's name and promote the prosperity of the country."
Bhagavan left for Brindavan on 12th morning.

Change the flight ticket

Mr. D.M. Dotiwala (74), who retired as a Sales Executive from the Tata Oil Mills (Pvt) Ltd, narrates a few of his experiences:

'We have been devotees of Sri Shirdi Sai. Though we had been hearing about Sri Sathya Sai, we had not paid much attention to it.
My wife, Mrs. Parin D. Dotiwala had darshan of Sri Sathya Sai Baba at Brindavan and returned much impressed. She visited Prasanthi Nilayam with one of our family friends, Mrs. Peethavala and returned a devotee of Bhagavan. Under her influence, I, too, gravitated towards Bhagavan.
In the year, 1982-83, I sat for darshan at Brindavan. One devotee from overseas was sitting by my side. I noticed that he was weeping.
'What's the matter?' I asked.
'I came here seven days ago with a letter to Bhagavan explaining all problems we are facing', he told me, 'but Bhagavan did not take the letter. He did not even look at me. My return flight is booked for this evening. If Bhagavan does not take my letter, I have no hope left and will have to return to my land disappointed and depressed'.
Meanwhile, Bhagavan came along the darshan line. Swami did neither take the letter nor look at him even. He went and sat on His throne. Bhajan began and also ended after half-an-hour with arati. Bhagavan started to walk back along the darshan line to His abode. When He came to us, He paused and told the overseas devotee by my side, 'come in the evening'.
'Congrats', I said after Bhagavan had left, but my friend did not look elated.
'My flight is at 6 p.m.', he said, 'if I come for evening bhajan, I may miss it'.
'Forget about the flight', I counselled, 'this is more important. It is a chance of a lifetime. Who knows, the flight may get delayed?'
In the evening also, we sat side by side in darshan line.
Bhagavan came and proceeded to His throne. After the bhajan, He was returning to His abode. When He came to us He paused.
'What is your problem?' Bhagavan asked.
My friend held the letter up in his hand, keeping it on his palm flatly. Bhagavan put His palm on it covering the letter and began talking to the devotee. I used to hear that when Bhagavan speaks to anyone in darshan lines, no other person can listen to Him, even if one sits by the side of the person to whom Bhagavan speaks. I learnt by experience the truth of it that day. Even though I was sitting by his side, I could not follow what Bhagavan was telling him.
After a few minutes, Bhagavan left. But the letter was still there in the hand of my friend. However, he did not appear sunken for Bhagavan not taking the letter. On the other hand, he was elated.
'What did Bhagavan say?' I asked him.
'He did not take my letter, not even read it', my friend began, 'but He touched upon all the thirteen points I mentioned in my letter. Importantly, He mentioned the points in the same order in which I wrote them in my letter. It was amazing. And, He solved all my problems'.
'Then, hurry up', I told him, 'you may catch your flight. May be it is delayed today, who knows? Better take a chance'.
'I don't think I would catch the flight', he said, 'however I will take a chance as you said'. Next morning I came for darshan and he was there again.
'What happened?' I asked, 'did you miss your flight?'
'I went to the airport and approached the check-in counter with my ticket', he told me, and 'the clerk seemed surprised and quietly returned the ticket'
'Am I late?' I asked, 'has the flight left?'
'The flight left all right, but you are not late', he said laughing at me, and 'you are 24 hours early. Your ticket is booked for tomorrow and not for today',
I was stunned. I was quite sure that my ticket had been booked for yesterday only. But, Bhagavan changed the date - not only on my ticket but on the entire online system of airline reservations across the world. He not only solved all my problems but also saved my ticket - not to speak of the most invaluable thing, the bonus darshan today'.
I was grateful to Bhagavan for allowing me to be a witness to this splendid leela of His.'

Sai Gayatri - SaiCharan TV

SAAYEESHWARYA VIDHMAHE,
SATHYA DHEVAAYA DHEEMAHI,
THANNAHSSARVAH PRACHODAYAATH

We know this Sai is Supreme Divinity incarnate.
We meditate on this God of Truth.
May this Almighty Personality lead us
on the path of total liberation.

The occasion was Christmas Eve of 24 December 1977. The place was the Sathya Sai Mandir in Brindavan, Whitefield, near Bangalore. The assembled audience consisted of a group of students and faculty members of Sri Sathya Sai College as well as a number of visiting devotees. It was in the glorious presence of Sri Sathya Sai Baba himself that a great vedic scholar Pandit Sri Ghandikota Subrahmanya Shastry was inspired to announce Sri Sathya Sai Gayathri, the mystic formula devoted to Sri Sathya Sai.

This Sathya Sai Gayathri, like other Gayathris, is on par with Veda Mantra or mystic formula. It has 24 letters; it consists of three lines, each with eight letters. Such a composition has unique properties. According to Maharishi Vararuchi, the numerology of all letters adds up to 108. That is why recitation is to be done 108 times; to realize the full effect of Siddhi - which is signified by the 108th number, i.e. Meru or the tassel of a rosary or Japamala. Ashtottara Sata Nama - the 108 name-chanting leads to the realization of God, which is the goal.

Every Gayathri Mantra has a revealing prophet or Rishi and a presiding deity, Adhishthana Devata, who is the subject of the mantra. This mantra is expressed through the inner workings of Sathya Sai through the mouth of Pandit Sri Ghandikota Subrahmanya Shastry in the presence of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Needless to say that Sai Baba himself is the presiding deity of this mystic formula or Mantra.

Resurrection of Walter Cowan

This amazing episode of how Bhagawan miraculously revived Walter Cowan after he had died of a massive heart attack is narrated by Mr. John Hislop in his book, ‘My Baba and I’:

Walter died in his room at the Connemara Hotel in Madras. He and his wife, Elsie, had arrived there on December 23, 1971 to see Baba, who was in Madras to preside at an All-India Conference of Sai Organizations.
Early on the morning of December 25, a rumour quickly spread that an elderly American had died of a heart attack. My wife, Victoria and I immediately thought of Walter. We went to the hotel and found Elsie (Walter’s wife) there. Walter had fallen to the floor in the early morning hours. Elsie had called Mrs. Ratanlal whose room was just down the corridor. The two women managed to lift Walter to the bed, and he passed away in Elsie's arms a few minutes later. An ambulance was called, The body was taken to a hospital, pronounced dead upon arrival, placed in an empty, storage room, and covered with a sheet to await daylight and decisions about the funeral.

Elsie and Mrs. Ratanlal had already been to see Baba when we arrived. He had told them He would visit the hospital at 10 a.m. The two ladies were ready and waiting to join Baba at the appointed hour. They did go to the hospital, but Baba had arrived earlier and had already departed. To the joy of the ladies, but also to their total amazement, they found Walter alive and being attended to. Nobody saw Baba with Walter, nor has Baba chosen to say how or why Walter was resurrected, but on returning to the devotee family who were his hosts, Baba told the people there that He had brought Walter back to life.
Walter's own story throws some light on what happened, and later on, I was a party to a fascinating episode; for Walter's life continued to be in danger and, in fact, Baba told me that Walter died three times and had to be returned to life three times.

Walter Cowan With Swami
Walter described his experience. He said he realized that he had died and that he had remained with the body, in the ambulance, looking at it with interest. Then Baba came and together they went to a place, which seemed to be at a great height. There they entered a conference room where people were seated around a table. There was a presiding chairman who had a kind face and who spoke in a kindly way. He called for Walter's records and these were read aloud. The records were in different languages and Walter did not understand what was said until after some time when Baba started to translate. Walter was surprised to hear that he had occupied a lofty status in various times and cultures and had always been dedicated to the welfare of the people. At length, Baba addressed the person presiding and asked that Walter be given over to Baba's care, for Baba had work for Walter to do. Then, when Baba and he departed the room, Walter felt himself descending towards a place where his body was, but felt great reluctance. In terms of direct experience, he had realized that he was not the body, and he had no wish to be subject again to anxieties and miseries.
After hearing Walter, I asked Baba if Walter was just imagining the incidents. Baba replied that it was not imagination. They had occurred in Walter's mind and Baba himself had guided the thoughts. I then asked if everyone had a similar experience at death. Baba answered that some people had similar experiences and some did not. Several years later, I brought up the question again. Baba answered that the corpse was common to all, but beyond that there was no common experience.

The day after Walter returned to life was one of high interest for me. Sri Appa and I accompanied Baba to the home of a devotee. From there we went to a meeting of lady members of the Nigara Sai Samithi where Baba was to give awards and speak. Sri Appa and I were sitting on the platform, just a few feet from Baba, and were able to observe him closely. He made the awards and gave a spiritual discourse, all without any break or any moment of hesitation. From that meeting, we were to go to the home of a devotee for lunch. As soon as we got in the car, Baba turned to us and said, "While I was talking in the meeting, Mrs. Cowan called me. I at once went to the hospital and did what was necessary. Mr. Cowan's health had taken a turn for the worse."

So, even while busy on the speaker's platform, Baba had gone to the hospital, and had done what was necessary. But, to the eyes of Sri Appa and myself, Baba had continued in action and speech on the platform for the whole time without any break or hesitation whatsoever. How does one explain this mystery?
When we arrived at the devotee's house for lunch, Baba turned to us and said, "You will not be able to join me for lunch. Take this Vibhuti to the hospital, give Mr. Cowan some in his mouth and rub the rest on his forehead and chest. If you will walk to the corner there, you will find Mrs. Hislop in a taxi. She will take you to the hospital."

Now the fact was, that my wife had been following in a car. However, she had taken great pains to stay out of sight, but her effort was to no avail for, as usual, Baba knew everything. When we reached the hospital with the Vibhuti, Mrs. Cowan said, "Walter took a very bad turn just a little while ago. I thought he was dead, and I was terrified. I at once called Baba in a loud voice. Now, Walter seems a little improved. When I called Baba I felt his presence at once." At the hospital, Elsie experienced exactly what Baba had told Sri Appa and myself in the car.

Other instances of Baba's powers of resurrection are also known. The Raja of Ventagiri told me how some twenty or so years ago, he had witnessed Baba's resurrection of a man dead some six days in whom body decomposition was taking its normal course. About these mysteries, one can make no comment; they are outside one’s common experience.

You pulled me back here just by your pure yearning

*Shri.Kasturi Garu's beautiful account of an incident in Brindavan.*

The examinations were approaching, Swami said that if He was with us at Brindavan, we do not study. Finally He decided to leave for Puttaparthi, just to make us study for exams...The boys fell at His feet, pleaded with Him, but Swami insisted on going. He said that He felt that He was the cause of the boys neglecting their studies and that feeling gave Him much pain.

It was Monday. Swami was preparing to leave by 8.30 A.M. The boys crowded round Him with sadness pain on their faces. Pleadings and prayers had proved fruitless. Swami was down on the ground floor. He got into the car, and the white vehicle glided away....With heavy hearts, boys walked slowly back into the Hostel. We tried in vain to concentrate on what the books had to tell us, so full was our hearts with the thought of our Lord. Barely 15 minutes had passed, when some one shouted "Swami has come!" and started running behind the car. I thought that the poor fellow was still dreaming and that his fantasy probably had given shape to that car.

But many more boys followed and I came out to ascertain for myself. What I saw, I could not believe. I saw the white car driving right up to portico. I rubbed my eyes once or twice to make sure for myself, and then I also ran . Swami walked up the stairs. Many of us could not believe what was happening. Swami said, "You boys were creating so much noise that I forgot to take the keys," ... Swami forgetting to take the keys!

Our hearts were full,... no one spoke. The tears that rolled down were probably more eloquent in expressing what was in our hearts. Somebody had probably still some doubts that Swami may leave again with the keys. So he asked very wisely. "Swami! shall we start unloading the things back from the car? "... No I am leaving again in the evening." Swami said, in pretended anger.. Then He broke into a beautiful smile, At this, a chorus of pleading voices followed, "Swami! Swami! And Swami decided to stay on. He told us latter, "You pulled me back here, just by your pure yearning.
Now you must study well, if you want me to stay here. Trivial, insignificant instances these, do you say? And What have they got to do with spirituality, do you ask? But what else is spirituality than yearning for Him, pining for Him, suffering anguish for Him?

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma - When did this start and how?

SAI BHAGAVATHAM:

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, a Santoor player of international repute, Padmavibhushan awardee, narrates a few of his experiences:
‘In 1968, I came to know that vibhuti was emanating in a house in Vile Parle - a suburb of Mumbai, from the photograph of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. I went there to play Santoor. I was amazed to find the glass in the frame of the photograph of Bhagavan completely covered with vibhuti. It was completely removed in my presence, but by the time I finished playing Santoor, the glass frame was covered again fully with vibhuti.

‘When did this start and how?’ I asked the landlord of the house. ‘My wife is a devotee of Baba’, he told me, ‘but I was not a believer. I used always to reprimand her for playing into the hands of Babas. After sometime, I had a problem of gout in my knees. I tried all sorts of treatment but in vain. My wife used to tell me to go to Puttaparthi once and pray to Baba. But I used to admonish her for such foolish advice. Finally I relented, as the problem grew acute. At Puttaparthi, Baba did not come my side for several days. I was growing restless. One day He came to me and stood before me. Touching me on my knees with His Divine hands, Swami said, ‘what is wrong with you? Get up!’ At once, I got up and started walking. The gout problem left me for good! Then we returned to Mumbai. We opened the doors of our house and entered. The first thing I noticed was that Baba’s photograph was full of vibhuti. Since then it has never stopped!’

From that day onwards, I yearned to have Darshan of Baba. Dr. Shukla, my family doctor, was keen that I should get a chance to play Santoor for Baba. Baba called me for personal interview. At the interview, Baba told us all about our problems. Santoor - the instrument I play, was never used till that time in Indian classical music. Those were the days when I was struggling to establish the instrument. Swami materialised a ring for me. He put it on my finger and said, ‘this is your home from today and my home is in your heart. Come to me anytime’. After that I had many chances to play on Santoor for Swami at Prasanthi Nilayam, Brindavan and Mumbai.

Once Swami was in Mumbai. But I could not go for Darshan as I was advised rest on medical grounds. A friend came to see me and began to criticise Bhagavan. It was a very unpleasant situation. I did not like to join issue with him. After a while he left. Then I noticed suddenly that the golden bust of Swami on my ring was missing. I was upset. Later, I found it on the carpet. Even though I was advised against movement, I took a taxi and went to Dharmakshetra. When we reached the place, Swami was going out in His car. It was a big disappointment. I kept the ring and the golden bust of Baba in a silver casket. Every morning, I used to unlock it, take out Baba’s golden bust and do pranam before I put it back.

One day I had a dream. I was sitting under a tree in Dharmakshetra. Swami was standing in front of me. ‘Don’t wear this ring’, He told me in the dream, ‘now take a new one’. He gave me a new ring in the dream. I woke up in the morning. Immediately I opened the silver casket. The ring was there but Swami’s golden bust disappeared!

After a few months, Baba came to Mumbai. I went for Darshan. After bhajan, a few of us were called to meet Baba. When Swami came near, I said, ‘Swami! My ring…’ Before I could complete my sentence, Swami said, ‘Swami came into your dream and gave you a new ring’. Suddenly I realised that I was sitting under the same tree under which I had sat in my dream. Swami then materialised a new ring and gave it to me. That day a young American requested for a lift to the airport. On the way, I asked, ‘how did you come to Swami?’ He is the son of an American Ambassador. He got interested in Indian spiritual thought and visited many ashrams in India. However he was disillusioned and wanted to return to his land. That day he had a dream. In it he saw a person very charming and loving. ‘Don’t go back. Go to Puttaparthi’, he said and explained how he could reach Puttaparthi. Later he went to the railway station and enquired only to find that the train numbers and timings he was told in the dream were correct. After he reached Puttaparthi, Swami came to him and said, ‘so you have come, my son!’ He could not believe his eyes and ears. Baba not only directed him in his dream to go over to Puttaparthi, but also recognised him on arrival. Since then he has been staying in India.

One day I ran into the famous singer Asha Bhonsle. She saw Baba’s ring on my finger and said, ‘I don’t believe in Him. Why are you going there?’ ‘It is purely a personal thing. I don’t want to discuss it’ I said. ‘Let us have a bet’, she told me, ‘if He comes in my dream today I will believe in Him. Otherwise, no!’ I was in no mood for bets. I said, ‘I don’t want to go into any betting on this, mataji’, I told her, ‘please stop this discussion’.

That night Asha Bhonsle had a dream in which Bhagavan appeared. On her request I took her to Dharmakshetra. She went to Puttaparthi afterwards. Swami did not speak to her for several days. One day Swami came to her and narrated to her how she had come to Puttaparthi – the bet, the dream and all.

Once I was flying from Rome to Mumbai. The plane stopped at Athens when a few persons boarded the plane. A Greek couple emplaned there and sat next to me. After the take-off, the lady said something to her husband. ‘Do you know Baba?’ he asked me. ‘Who Baba?’ He touched the ring Bhagavan gave me earlier and said, ‘I mean Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. What a coincidence? We are on our way to Puttaparthi and we sat by your side – a devotee of Baba’. ‘How did you come to know of Baba?’ I asked him. ‘I was passing through a difficult phase in life’, he told me, ‘one night I saw a person in my dream. He was a total stranger but was very loving. He blessed me and said, ‘everything will be all right’. After that day things began to move and all my problems began to get sorted out. One day I saw a book displayed in the showcase of a bookshop. I was pleasantly shocked to find the photograph of the person who blessed me in my dream, on the book. I went into the shop and bought the book. It is in Greek and is about Sri Sathya Sai Baba.’

Once I was in Canada for my first major concert in Toronto. It was heavily raining on that day. Organisers were sceptical whether people would come for the concert in that rain. Their previous concerts in that place had not done well. But, owing to Bhagavan’s grace, the auditorium was full by the time I came on the stage. The concert went off well. After the concert, there was dinner at somebody’s house. The host came to me during dinner and said, ‘when you were playing tonight, I had a very strange experience. I had seen Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s photograph earlier. I am neither a believer in Him, nor His devotee. But during the performance, I saw a couple of times your face changing into that of Sri Sathya Sai Baba as if he was playing Santoor.’ Everybody present was amazed to hear this.

Similar experience was reported to me in San Francisco also. Just before the concert started, the sound system began to give trouble. I went into the green room and prayed to Baba. When I came on the stage, I was surprised to find that the auditorium, which was sparsely occupied earlier, was full. Another miraculous development was that the sound system began to function well. Added to this, a person came to me during the dinner and said, ‘I am a devotee of Baba. When you were playing, your face disappeared a few times and Baba’s face was seen as if He was playing Santoor!’ I was amazed that two different types of individuals reported the same kind of experience at two different places.

In November 1998, I went with my son Rahul to Dubai to give a concert there. One day prior to the concert, the organisers took us to see a Sand Dune Safari, which is famous there. Shafath Ahmed Khan, the famous Tabla player and a Baba devotee, Rahul and others were in one car, and my wife Manorama and a few others were in another car. The car in which my son Rahul was travelling was a brand new car. We were quite ahead of them when the driver turned our car back on receiving a call on his cell phone. After a while, we saw a lot of people surrounding a car. There was an ambulance and a police car also. We were shocked to find that it was the car in which my son Rahul and others were travelling. The sight was so frightening that my wife lost control being in a state of shock. Then, to our great relief, we saw Rahul, Shafath and others in the car looking at the car standing in the gathering. When the car was travelling at 135 km speed, there was a tyre-burst. The car hit the steel railing in the middle of the highway and was about to collide with a big trailer-truck coming from behind, which missed it miraculously by a few inches. The car overturned and began to spin like a toy till it came to a stop on its own. Everyone was trapped inside. The police who arrived soon helped them come out. Though the car was completely smashed all its occupants escaped miraculously. My son had no injury except a little pressure on his finger, which turned blue. Only one passenger had a minor bleeding injury. But for that, everyone escaped without even a scratch. My son and others were taken to a private hospital for check-up. The first thing they saw there was a big photograph of Bhagavan. Next day the concert could be held as scheduled. It was a grand success.

On November 21, 1998, we came to Prasanthi Nilayam to attend Baba’s Birthday celebrations. During Darshan, Swami came to me and asked, ‘where is Son?’ Rahul was sitting next to me. I said, ‘Swami! He is here.’ ‘Where is Son?’ Swami again asked. I thought Bhagavan was enquiring about my elder son. ‘Swami! Rohit has not come’, I replied. ‘Where is Son?’ Swami repeated the same question. I was confused that Swami was asking the same question. Suddenly its meaning dawned on me. ‘Swami saved him’, I told Swami. ‘Yes! I know’, Swami replied with a smile and left.
Next morning we were called for an interview. Swami narrated the whole incident giving description of the car, its speed, tyre-burst and Rahul shouting ‘Baba! Baba!’ ‘When it (accident) happened in Dubai, some were with me here’, Swami told us, ‘I told them, ‘Shivkumar Sharma’s son met with a serious accident.’ They asked, ‘Swami! How is he now?’ I told them, ‘he has been saved.’ Swami gave a new life to Rahul, Shafath and others in that car.’

Mothers Role - Chinnakatha

Lord Krishna visited Queen Gandhari console her after the Kurukshetra battle. She accused Him: "Though You are God, how could You be so partial. You supported the Pandavas but could not save at least one son out of the hundred sons I bore." Krishna replied: "Sister, I am not responsible for the death of your children. You are responsible." Gandhari replied: "Krishna how can You be so hard hearted to accuse me thus?" Krishna replied: "Sister, you gave birth to a hundred sons but did you ever cast your loving glance on at least one of them? You chose to remain blindfolded. You could not see for yourself how your sons were faring. Your sons are indeed the most unfortunate ones because they could not enjoy their mother's tender care and affectionate glance. How could they grow into
disciplined, dutiful and righteous heroes? Mother is the first teacher and preacher".

"Just think for yourself the situation and compare it with that of Queen Kunti. Kunti from the moment of her husband's death, brought up her sons with great care and affection. She was with them both in the palace and in the house of wax as well. The Pandavas would never do anything without the blessings of their mother. They could earn My grace not because of their individual talents but because of Kunti's constant prayer to Me: 'Oh Krishna! You alone should protect them.' Those who are not fortunate enough to enjoy the loving glance of their mother cannot earn the divine vision, nor can they win the love of God."

What should we learn from Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagawatam

What is the main ideal taught in Ramayana? If you enquire throughout the text of the Ramayana, you will understand that it is desire which is the main enemy. Mahabharata teaches that it is greed which subjects man to all humiliation. It is the Bhagavata that teaches man that it is anger which makes man forget his human nature and human qualities.

Faith is essential for human progress

Faith is essential for human progress

“Seeing a glass half filled with water, the optimist is glad that it is half full, while the pessimist is sad that it is half empty. Though both statements are correct, the optimist hopes to fill the other half too, while the pessimist gives up in despair. The one has faith; the other has no faith to sustain him. So, we must develop faith by steady effort.

Faith must lead to effort. Faith is essential for human progress in every field. Knowledge, and through knowledge, wisdom can be earned only by means of faith and effort. Equipped with these, man can venture into the heights and emerge victoriously. Of course, one has to be warned against cultivating too much faith in things that are merely material. One has to develop it deep in the eternally valid Truth, God.

Faith is power. Without faith, living is impossible. We have faith in tomorrow following today. That
is what makes us take up activities and projects that extend beyond this day. People with no faith cannot plan; they court misery by their want of faith.

A rich man in South Africa once heard a divine voice which promised him a gold mine, if only he would dig at a certain place. He dug at that place to a depth of 200 feet and failed to discover any vein of gold. His faith waned. He doubted the authenticity of the voice. He talked to others how the voice had played false. When another rich man heard his story, he developed great faith in what he believed to be God's command. He dug in the same areas and laid bare a rich gold mine barely three feet below the surface of the earth. That became the richest and the most famous of the gold mines of South Africa.

During the Second World War, a steamer carrying Indian sepoys was bombed by the Japanese and it was sunk. Many lost their lives. Only five men managed to row their life-boat and hoped to have a chance to survive, in spite of the surging ocean. They were tossed about for many hours. One of them became desperate. "The sea will swallow me. I will be food for sharks," he cried, and, in panic, he fell into the sea. Another sepoy wept for his family. "I am afraid they will suffer much. I am dying without arranging for their future", he said. He too lost his faith in his survival and breathed his last. The third man said, "Alas! I have with me the policy documents of insurance. What a pity I did not give them to my wife. How can she get the amount, now that I am dying?" And he also died.

The other two men reinforced each other's faith in God. They said, "We shall prove by sticking to life, however desperate the situation. God has created us for some good purpose. We shall not yield to fear. We shall not give up faith in God's compassion and power". They had to give up the leaky boat and swim towards the shore. Within five minutes, a helicopter sent from a coastal ship which had received signals for help from the sinking steamer, sighted them and hauled them up to safety. While safe on land, they said, "It is only five minutes between victory and defeat". Those who dug for the gold mine could well say, "It is only three feet of soil between victory and defeat". Faith won the victory; want of it brought about defeat and death.”
